This wine tasting took place in a lovely home in historic Nantucket. Cecil DeLoach was present to offer a range of his vintage 2000 zinfandels. My favorites were the Barbieri Ranch (old vines), the Gambogi Ranch and the O.F.S. (our finest selection) which at over $40 a bottle retails for about twice the price of the Barberi or Gambogi. We were also provided with detailed technical sheets on each wine and treated to anecdotes about the original Italian winemakers of that area. I now have an invite to stay at the DeLoach guesthouse in Sonoma if I coordinate a visit at a time when they can accommodate me.

Cecil is a legend among those who did it on a shoestring. I have a lot of respect for the gentleman.

Far and away DeLoach's best wines are the single vineyard Zins. Character, finesse and terroir---and, unlike most Zin, they actually age well.
