I just got my 1997 Burgess Napa Valley Zinfandel from LA at a steal of a price - as was posted on another thread.

So here is the line-up:

1998 Cline Old Vines Zinfandel
1999 Cline California Zinfandel
1999 Bonny Doon Cardinal Zinfandel (neat label!)
1998 Ranch Zabaco Sonoma Heritage Vines
1997 Burgess Napa Valley Zinfandel

No comparison can be done today, since the Burgess just arrived and has to rest for a while.

I sure wish one of you could join me for a blind taste. I think it will be interesting to taste all these guys and see who ends up as the winner, but I hate to do it alone..........

Depending on how badly you "hate" to taste those alone, you could send us air tickets.

My bet:
Cardinal Zin will not win (despite the label)

I'd be glad to send you some airline tickets..... what is your credit card number, please?

The label on the Bonny Doon is something else, is it not?

I've got to let the Burgess rest, it just arrived from LA. I'll try to post some notes about the "taste off" in a couple of weeks.

IK is coming to visit on January 16th and right now we are planning on a crown roast of lamb. Maybe I can change his mind and we can have some ostrich or buffalo from the grill and then match that with the "Zin Kinda Horizontal War"........

Watch out for IK, Mike. He will regale you with stories from his checkered past, to win you over, and then he will post your picture on this board.

MrD, what's the verdict? My $$ is on the Burgess.

As yet all are waiting for the competition. We'll get there, believe me.

- winoweenie - 01-11-2001

MissurD, If the Burgess don`t win thin I knows Ik has spun some story of the marvy Ronies or Foodie tells you that Zin is nuttin` more than the wunnerful Italian Varietal Duriff that has been prostituted by itenerat gypsies from Hungary operating as the ZIN GANG. NO CASE winoweenie

Well it was some competition, but I really kinda thought that the best of the list was the Burgess, followed by the Cline Old Vines, with a bit of stiff competition between the Rancho Zabacco and the Bonny Doon all followed by the Cline California.

Then I found this really interesting Zin from BLOCKHEADIA .......... drank a few of them and am now concentrating on Rhone Ranger stuff...... You know, wines that start with strange letters like C and G and Mourvedre and S and stuff like that.

Man, I'm all over the place. But am trying hard to stay away from wines that start with C or M.

Sorry it took me so long to post some kind of comments. But a lot has been going on in the past three months or so...... My wife is telling me to take a sabbatical like WW did a while back. She thinks the recycling bin has too many wine bottles in it.

On the other hand, my doctor thinks that I am the picture of health, considering!

If you think that "C", "G","S" and "Mourvedre" are funny letters...take the sabbatical!
