Was in a local wine store! last week and found this 1997, Ronchi Di Manzano, Colli Orientali Del Friuli, Merlot ($17.00). The grey matter stirred, and somehow remembered that some Italian-American starting up a wine store in a formerly decrepit part of New York City recently recommended Friuli Merlot; so we bought it. What a recommendation! God, did we say that? At any rate it started out dark ruby red to the eye. Plums on the nose. Black currents up front. (Does that bother you; it used to bother me? Go to a "gourmet" store and get a jar of English black current preserves or jelly. Taste it. Then you'll be in the in crowd.) Anyhow, wonderful complexity and earthyness on the mid palate, and an enchanting finish. Mrs IK loved it too. Had it with grillpanned Porterhouse steak done the usual way, and salad. If you like your Merlot the Old World way, and/or don't want to pay upwards of $35.00 per bottle; this is the way to go at half the price.
