2001 Enzo Mecella, Pagliano, Verdicchio di Matelica ($13 Wine Expo). Verdicchio is a wine that can vary as much as those made from chenin blanc. This one was on the lighter side, much like a lively Maconnais. The color of light lime juice with a little spritz met the eye. Ripe pears on the nose and upfront. A little earth and acidic minerality (one of the few wines that show this) across the palate, and a very nice finish. It fell a little short with the same fried chicken dinner we had the American Unwooded Chard with the other night, but would be splendid with a light fish dish such as Sole Meuniere, or as an aperitif. It would be great for perambulating a summer patio. That is what we will do the second bottle, and may well get some more.

This is from the same family that brings you our favorite Rosso Piceno that is apparently not available in the U.S. anymore. The label on this wine is a story in itself. There was only one label on both bottles. It looks like a back label, and may well be. The front label may have been removed by the organization formally know as the ATF, or Roberto’s goons. At any rate, THE label reads as follows:

PAGLIANO
Verdicchio di Matelica

White Wine

Bottled by ENZO MECELLA Fabriano (AN) Italy

Product of Italy

Imported by: Delos Fine Wines & Spirits
Woodlands Hills, CA 91367

Government Warning: (Followed by six lines of text).

Contains Sulfites

Net Cont. 750 ML Alc: 12.5% By Vol.

It does not have a vintage on it! The 2001 came from Roberto. The 12.5% is also interesting. For you novices, this is the content when all table wines were listed at 12.5%. That was when all spirits were listed at 86 proof (or 43% alcohol) except for a few Bourbons and Canadians that hit 90 proof. Nowadays the 12.5% is printed when the winery doesn’t want to print it or can’t print it; or when it is the actual content.

IK, two pallets of the Rosso Piceno are en route to Livorno as we speak. Should I just send all 112 cases to you and save the trouble of unloading them????

Enzo sends his love, I have translated many of your pleas for his wine and forwarded them to him.

Roberto

Just send me a box when they get here, and I be happy.

Well, we had the second bottle with the Sole Meuniere as we thought it would go with it. It did! Excellent. Bev drank as least as much as I did!
