2002 Salvalai, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ($5.50 Blue Hill Wine Shop). Medium bodied (12% alcohol) wine that the producer recommends serving slightly chilled as you would a Beaujolais. Gives you plums, chocolate, and floral hints on the nose and upfront. Complex flavors of spice, dark cherries, and more chocolate cross the palate with tannin as smooth as (you know), and just a hint of oak. Nice finish. All this not bad at all for a wine that runs less than six bucks. Matched nicely with macaroni and cheese, accompanied with spinach. A nice wine to recommend to people looking for a lighter red wine.
