I've posted before under Grape Stuff, but I can't seem to log on any longer....anyway, I ran across the following 2 wines at Sams Club and wondered if they are typically good producers or not, and if the price seems reasonable. I’m just now starting to try and figure out Bordeaux

Lynch Bages 1999 at $55.00
Pichon Longueville 1999 at $63.00

Thanks

Welcome to the board, 3H. The Lunch Bags at $55 is probably nominal... bought some at Costco in Nov '02 for $36. Suspect the Pichon price is also nominal, although it didn't show up on my benchmark search with Spec's Website (Houston). My problem is, I can't get a good fix on an immature wine, so I can't predict from a poor showing now what it will be like in say 2009. At least, that's the case with the '99 LB; I tried one bottle and thought the tannins would strip the bark off a tree.... yet I'm confident it will be a winner with a few more years in the cellar. You pays your money and takes your choice, as they say. But I do feel now is the time of year to gamble on Sam's Club wines; later when the summer heat is upon us, I wouldn't consider paying those prices for their offerings, due to the likelihood of heat damage in shipment or storage.

Thanks Hotwine, you know I think that's why I've always taken this why bother attitude with Bordeaux. If I don't know what I'm getting, and paying good $...why bother?

You must be surrounded by Costco stores, 3H. Suggest you look there for good prices on Bordeaux. With a max 14% margin, their prices are awfully hard to beat.... and their wine selection far surpasses that of Sam's Clubs.

funny you ask about Costco. yes we have many of those around, and we used to go there until my wife disovered this drink called Fruit2o. It's flavored water with no carbonation, no calories, no carbs, just nice fruity flavor (it's really quite good), and of course it's only available at Sams Club.

Our Costco carries Fruit 2o. I drink a lot of it. Maybe Costco would get it if you requested it. Make sure you tell them that you've been going to Sam's for that reason.

Excellent Idea!
