A nice lineup of free wine tasting last Saturday at Carolina Wine Company in Raleigh (prior to the Sting/Annie Lenox outdoor concert). These wines are mostly being offered at sale prices to move them and they are a good bargain especially if you buy by the case.
I didn't take notes at the time but enjoyed everything offered this time.
William Fevre Chablis "Champs Royaux" (I'd enjoyed this before in a Baltimore restaurant)
Brocard Kimmeridgien Chardonnay (terroir is very close to Chablis and wine is unoaked and refreshingly crisp) $12.99 or $10.99;
2000 Decker Chardonnay, Sonoma, Ca (refreshing for a Cal Chard and only $10.79 a bottle by the case)
Then some pleasing reds:
2001 Steele Mendocino Ridge Zinfandel--a light style that Jed Steele compares to claret and the wine shop owner compares to Pinot Noir
2001 Wynn's "Black Label" Estate Cabernet Sauvignon $14.99/$12.99 tasty, ready-to-go
2002 Wynn's Estate Shiraz $12.00/$10.99 I liked this even better than the C.S. and had already ordered a bottle--more incredible bargains from Down Under
the final wine was a Chateauneuf-du-Pape that was quite popular with the Saturday crowd but I didn't write down the details.

A good prelude to a good concert at Walnut Creek amphitheater.
