Okay buddy, I'll work with you here. Given that 1998 was not the primo year for CA Cabs, I would give the wine around 7 years of age tops, then drink it with a nice, dry-aged rib eye steak from Niman Ranch.

Thanks guys. That's about what I was guessing. I realize it wasn't the best year but at the 0 price point, how could I refuse? Hey Parker upped it to a 94 recently and Speculator is still an acceptable 92. How bad could it be?

A word of caution. There is a lot of controversy and the jury is still out on the holding properties of these over extracted from over ripe grapes cult wines. I understand that they are splendid when consumed young. Hope this doesn't mess with your mind.

Take that sucker, invite your significant other, a couple of friends, and dazzle them with your footwork. This is a fine bottle of juice, just not worth, IMHO, the bucks at release. WW

The '98 Screagle should be quite drinkable now through '08, if per chance I got to drink one for free, there shouldn't be much hesitation here, others such as Harlan, Dalla Valle, and Shafer Hillside with the '98 sticker have been quite nice since they fell off the FedEx wagon and '99 Screagle was nice off the truck so I can't imagine the '98 being to young at this point. That said I sure as heck wouldn't pay the secondary tariff, but if ya got em, drink em!

Don't have the deep pockets to put the Screagle in the cellar (free would be good, though). We're considering a 97 or 98 Jones Family with the prime rib roast on Sunday. Not quite the same, but should be decent, nonetheless.

My only hesitation in opening it right away is it would be fun to own it for a while. Knowing it is in the minicellar is almost as good as drinking it. Plus the longer I have it, the easier it is to get past that I just opened a bottle that I could have sold on winecommune for $700+.

I'd say the longer you have it, the more likely you'll try and turn it over. Go ahead and pop it! Enjoy a wine that you'll likely never have again. Have a nice meal with your s/o and/or good friends/family, and just do it!
Then, of course, post comprehensive tasting notes on here so that we may live vicariously [img]http://wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]
Plus, just think of how you'd feel if that was in the minicellar and there was another power outage this summer [img]http://wines.com/ubb2/eek.gif[/img]
