This is a classic example of beautiful fruit ruined by massive amounts of oak and huge, hard tannins. Pass.....

Hey Bucko, disappointing news about the Pride Cab Franc. My wife (that still seems odd to say since we've been married only 12 days!) and I enjoy Cab Franc immensely. We've like the Ravenswood, Babcock's Fathom, and a few others... any recommendations? We recently went to the wine country and enjoyed Rombauer's and Sinskey's. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Re Cab Franc...Check out Geyser Peak, Jekel, Cosentino, Indian Springs, Kendall-Jackson "Grand Reserve"...and for a real bargain ($10 or less) Hahn Estate. Also priced around $10 and tasty, but more in the lighter bodied style...Ironstone is a good buy. Another bargain is Pepperwood Springs...also in $10 category.

I do not drink much Cab Franc, but one that I consistently enjoy is L'Ecoste. Another nice Cab Franc from Washington is Waterbrook.

And if you live near the SF Bay Area, Cooper-Garrod's Cab Franc is very tasty. If you're flush, Dalla Valle's Maya is supposed to be: extremely good, and mostly Cab Franc.

Then, there's always Chinon and other Loire Valley reds...(ask someone else for help here.)

My favorite Chinons (which are made from Cabernet Franc) come from Joguet. These can be fabulous wines and range from 15-30 dollars or so, the cheaper wines being lighter and fruitier (like the young vines) and the more expensive wines being bigger and more ageworthy (such as the Chene Vert or the Dioterie).

Thanks for the suggestions... I knew that I'd asked the right crowd!

I have had very good luck with Jekel's cab franc in the few years that they choose to make it.

I have never had the Jekel. What can you tell me about it?
