Went up to Napa for this tasting (which was $25 per serving)

Nose of bright fruits and berries, restained light new wood. Taste is the same along with coffee and persistent fruit right throughout. Hint of chocolate with a bit of pleasant bitterness at the end. Medium body and medium to long finish. Clean mouth entry, a bit thin, but good structure and a slightly tart acidity. Decent, elegant, but $165 per bottle?

Opus, IMHO, hasn't made anything GREAT since 91-92 and for that price, I want something GREATTTTT. I am curious though, you didn't mention any tannin structure or possible aging. Any ideas?

Tannins were there but nothing overpowering. I think that the acidity is good though and if both of these are needed for aging then this one should age okay. The fruit may recede though (as there was not an overabundance of fruit), so it may be more interesting within a few years of it's release...then again....take everything I say with a huge grain of salt.

I've gotta assume that the price structure is broken down in the following manner

Building $20
Branding $40
Marketing $20
Hoccus P. $45
Wine $40
Total $165

Need to add 25 from the wine to the HP quotient. WW

1997 Opus One was the wine that convinces me that over $100 a bottle is a fair price if is really good. Not that I can afford to pay that, but I can dream...

For what Brappy said, that the last great vintage was 91-92, then I have a lot to learn and taste still....

Anyone who had grapes in his possession in 97 should have been able to make superior wine. One of the all-time classic Calif. vintages. Can think of 25-30 producers that made better juice than the Opus in that year. WW
