Howdy all--

Been underwater with work! Not enough time for wine. Rectified that to an extent last night.

It seems a client of ours, who is not a wine guy by any means, won 3 bottles of 1985 Sassicaia (RP 100) at a recent wine auction/charity event. He knew how envious we were, so he graciously acquiesced to some pressure from a colleague of mine and agreed to bring a bottle to a wine tasting for us to try. This colleage set up the tasting at a restaurant here in town, with the requirement that everyone had to bring a nice cab.

So here's what we had, in order:

1995 Sassicaia
1997 Boscarelli (don't think this was a cab)
1995 Ch. Leoville-Barton
1997 Ch. St. Jean Cinq Cepages
1998 Dalla Valle Napa
1999 Pride Cab
1996 Phelps Insignia
1999 Phelps Insignia

Then a bottle of 20 year tawny port with desert (Dow or Fonseca, couldn't remember by that point!)

The Sassicaia was great, but more elegant and less boisterous than some of its younger California cousins--in a different league. 97 Ch. St. Jean, a favorite of mine, was the star of the show, followed closely by the 99 Insignia, the 95 Leoville-Barton, and the 99 Pride.

Man, am I hung over today!

A very nice lineup there Radskie.A little surpeised the 96 Insignia didn't score better. Last bottle I tried it was just coming together. In 10 years there'll be a drastic change in this groups ratings. The 99 Sig and the Sassy one will run away from the rest of this crowd. Chow.WW
