Howdy all--

Buried with work again. But did want to report on a phenomenal tasting I attended last night here in NYC--26 years of Phelps Insignia from 1974 to 1999, with only the 1981, 1988, 1989, and 1991 missing.

Any guesses as to the wine of the evening?

My personal preferences are 75,78 and even tho young the 94. The last bottle of 75 we had 4 years ago ranks in the top 5 best of my experience.WW ( Think big Bob picked it as the wine he'd be satisfied to be marooned wif' on a what-ever.) WW

Liked em all--but I have to say, the '74 was the hands-down winner. Still fresh, exploding with flavor in the mouth, but like drinking crushed velvet. Spectacular.

To be fair, some of the vintages in the 80s were a bit monolithic--certainly not bad, but lacking some complexity and nuances that one might expect with age.

All in all, a fabulous evening! WW, for me that 1974 was definitely a top-5 of all time...but then again, I think I'm younger than you, and I haven't had a chance to drink as much!
