2009 Pine Ridge Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon - TheEngineer - 03-10-2013

Over the last few years, I've been really enjoying the proliferation of mountain fruit. I really do enjoy the wines as they have that, for me, that mountain wideness, that density and vigor, almost a bit savage. In order, Howell, Veeder and then finally the best, Pritchard Hill (Ridge is very different by the way so not part of this discussion but I mention only cuz I love Ridge).

This wine stands tall on its own. Love the density of the wine, the attack of the wine, It full on fro first sip and does not let go of you, the ripeness and the full structure of the wine is impressive. But..and you knew this was coming,....it just lacked the bits that I consider the best. If you stand a great Ladera or O'Shaughnessy, both of whom have been making wine for less time, and this one is a definitive one step back. It's missing that last bit of character. It lacks a bit of the freshness but only ever so. Hard to explain Well made but it's like standing at the foothills of the mountain, impressive enough, but the others are like being in the mountain.
