A strange malady hit my computer yesterday. After being on for 10 min or so it turns itself off. I'm typing as fast as my lil' fat fingers can go. Hope no-one else has this . Don't know if'n it's a virus or not. My security guard is up and running WW

- winedope1 - 09-14-2002

WW- had that happen for several days in a row a few months ago. Never found out what it was, but it stopped happening on its own. Hope it stops for you soon. WD

Yhanks WD. Gives me hope. This sucker is driving me crazier. Took me 6 tries to get online just now. GadBlastIt. WW

Still has a mind of its' own. Calling Hewlitt-Packard this am. WW

- hotwine - 09-16-2002

Sounds like the "Standby" mode setting, WW. Does it shut down while you're typing, or only during pauses in which there is no mouse or keyboard activity?

- winedope1 - 09-16-2002

hotwine- my computer did both and I too had an HP. Something to take up with the company?

- hotwine - 09-16-2002

I also have an HP, running Windows ME. It sometimes locks up (keyboard goes dead while mouse can still be moved, yet will not launch any hot link clicked on). Sometimes, a 3-fingered salute will allow it to be cleared (CNTL-ALT-DEL, done once), while on other occasions a reboot is required (CNTL-ALT-DEL, done twice). And on still other occasions, even a reboot is impossible. When that happens, the power switch on the CPU is also inactive, and I've got to crawl under the desk and kill the power strip. I don't think it's HP - I blame Bill Gates and his Windows monstrosity. From what I've heard, Windows XP has fewer of those faults. But Linux has even fewer, as does the Mac OS. I really think the best solution is to get rid of Windows. It will be traumatic to do that, but I'm sick of serving in the Gates Beta population, in which his customers are expected to trobleshoot his products.

Hotwine- I don't think that Windows XP probably has less snags- I had it when these problems occurred. WD

- hotwine - 09-17-2002

Sorry to hear that, WD. So much for my planned quick fix of changing over to XP.

- winoweenie - 09-17-2002

Tues and still a mind of its' own. Typing as fast as my lil' fat fingers can go. Hewlitt-Packard said I'd owned the machine since last August, one month too long so there'd be a charge. I told them where they could put their charge, their Pavillions, and Help. WW

- winedope1 - 09-17-2002

Sorry, WW. Feel for you. Hope it all gets settled for you real soon. WD

- winoweenie - 09-29-2002

L.I.B. Winedope so far so good. Back from the trip, shut this sucker down, turned it on this AM and I've been on a solid hour. Praise the Comp Gods. WW

- winedope1 - 09-29-2002
