Welcome to the board... Here's the opinion of relative newbie to the world of wine.

1) How to tell if it's a Good Wine: Open bottle. Pour 1/3 of a glass, swirl, sniff and insert some of the contents in mouth. Decide if you would like to continue the experiment with more of the wine. If so, and it's a pleasureable experience doing so, then for you, that's a good wine. (Others results may vary.)

2) Understanding Wine terms: Find a copy of "Wine for Dummies", as heartily recommended fairly often on this board. It's a great primer, and will give you a ton of insight into the wonderful varities of wine.

And most importantly...

Study! (I reccomend studying at least a glass a day... Winoweenies results WILL vary)
