What is the difference between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio?

They are the same grape, unless you ask the airhead pourer at Chateau Julian in Carmel Valley. The difference in wines has to do with terroir and winemaker differences. The French style is Pinot Gris as made in the Alsace. The Italian style is Pinot Grigio as made in Northeastern Italy. Those made in the New World more or less emulate these styles.
