From what I remember, no specific reason for the name, but the wine is rather "green"- young and fizzy.

These wines do not travel well and in fact got a bad reputation as early as medieval times. It was not until Porto came on the scene did Portuguese wines begin to travel well, and they needed brandy to accomplish the feat.

There are, however, some fantastic Portuguese wines from the Douro River area and Dao. One white that I recently tasted was worth the $5 or $6 it cost - Catarina (do not remember where it was from). Feist produces good Douro reds.
