- rpastor - 01-28-1999 I'm interested in finding out the value of a 100 yr old bottle of Tokay wine from Hungary. Anyone know how I can do this?? - Jerry D Mead - 01-29-1999 Is this an Essencia or an Aszu? If it's the former, there may be an auction history for it listed in a book called Wine Price File, as Essencia is indeed very collectable and there's even a remote possiblity that a 100 year old example might be palatable. I've tasted examples 50-75 years old that were still sound and have had French Sauternes (made from grapes affected by the Botrytis mold) that were from turn of the century that were delicious. You may find the book at the library, a fancy wine shop or a big city book store. It's also sold by Wine Trader Book Services. It is not inexpensive...the list price is $44 and it comes out annually. You can make further inquiries about the book's availability at winetrader@aol.com And perhaps another board member is an Essencia fancier and will have a better idea of approximate value. JDM - Joe Schmoe - 02-14-1999 If it is an Aszu 5 or 6 puttonyos, I'm sure that it will have a value to a sweet wine fancier. WC is right that its provenence is important, as in Hungary, the bottles are stored upright, and the cork is replaced every 30 years or so. (Very bizarre) However, I have been fortunate to taste such a Tokaji that was nearly 100 years old, and due to the extreme level of botrytis and almost painful acidity (eiswein levels) that these wines generally have (given by the grape Harslevelu of 'Lime Leaf') they CAN go the distance even in the slightly less prestigious Aszu form. If it is Essencia, however, you may be looking at several hundred dollars worth from a good domaine. Is it wax sealed? Joe |
