What a voice on this woman! She's from Bahia, and sings a great deal of Bossa Nova, Chico Buarque and Caetano Veloso songs in a new style. Roberto -- is she big in Brazil?

Not really but one of my friends is her guitarist.... A lot of artists like her are bigger in Europe and Japan than in Brasil.

That's very interesting! Though, I suppose, not all that different -- many American artists are bigger overseas than here, and visa versa.
So, on my next trip to the CD store, any good recommendations for me?
Oh -- I heard her song on an old Puttmanyo (sp?) Bossa Nova CD in Teavana (they're usually playing some sort of "world music" in there), and went out and bought her self-titled import CD. Loved it, so I went onto Amazon last night to see if I couldn't pick up another one from her, but they're out-of-stock on everything.

Well, on Friday night I was browsing a bookstore and wandered into the music area. I picked up "Rose and Charcoal," by Marisa Monte, and "Ao Vivo," by Djavan. Loved the Monte, so on Saturday I went to the real music store and picked up Tribalistas to get a bit more of her. Also picked up Jobim-Morelenbaum Quarteto, though it wasn't on your list.
Love everything, though I still have not done justice to Djavan with an extended listening.

The 12th song on Tribalistas (Ja sei namorado) could be a big summer hit here even in the original Portugues. I have been screaming at the US distributor to release it as a single and get behind it.
Re Djavan, he is one of the great wordsmiths of all of pop music. In "Se" (If), he declares
"It would be easier to learn Japonese in Braile than for you to decide to give me your heart...." (it all rhymes in Portugues).
