mine here in Phoenix hasn't even uttered one byline about this being one of the most dramatic and eventful days in our history....Pearl Harbor. The start of WW2. Guess it's the same ole' same ole' what's happening of import today? WW

I thought about it this morning thinking of my dad. Checked our local rag, The Baltimore Sun, and found a small hyper link towards the bottom of the "Nation" section. Pathetic!

We had a pretty big feature article in ours, the San Antonio Express-News (www.mysa.com). Also mentioned prominently in church this morning. The Fredericksburg newspaper (www.fredericksburgstandard.com) also gave it prominence, since the town is the site of the War of the Pacific Museum and home of Adm. Chester Nimitz. Survivors of Pearl Harbor have been meeting there this weekend.

Heard it on the radio this morning

I have two reasons to remember the date: my second reason is that it is the date I entered the Air Force, not the same year of course...

It was on the front page of the New Hampshire Union Leader, as well as on the front page of Google News if you scrolled down far enough.

Talked to my dad yesterday. He was there as 1LT USMC getting ready to leave for Wake Island (which thankfully never happened). He mentioned that there are fewer of his fellow survivors left.

There's another big front page article in the SA Express-News this morning about the Pearl Harbor survivors' reunion in Fredericksburg the last couple of days. It featured parades, schoolkids meeting with the vets, firthand accounts, etc. And descriptions of the locals jumping to their feet with applause when vets entered restaurants. And that little town (pop. about 8500) is a sight to behold when one of their local boys comes home from war in a box.... shops are closed, everyone lines the streets between the church and cemetary with hats off and flags at half-staff.... no dry eyes anywhere. My kind of town. (Our little ranch is about 12 miles north of there.)

I didn't check out the local paper but at church when we offer prayers from the pews, I asked for prayers for all veterans, especially those of World War II.
My father was an ROTC instructor when we entered the war and he went to the Philippines after it was retaken but did not see combat. I believe two of his brothers saw combat in France (Uncle Frank was in an Army Air Force bomb squadron I believe). His youngest brother was too young to serve.

The Virginian-Pilot had human interest story starting on the front page. It was a story about a woman who was a child on the island durng the attack. Her arm was cut with shrapnel..... Her father was in the Navy but at sea when the attack occurred....

I put my flag (which flies 24/7 unless the weather is really severe) at half-mast at Midnight (Saturday Night / Sunday Morning).

It flew for the full 24 hours of December 7, 2008 at half-mast.

I do this every December 7th since I installed the flag pole. And, yes, there is a very bright spot-light directed toward the flag! It really is neat to see that brightly lighted flag flying in front of my home!
