My grand-daughter is coming back today for a two day visit before she and her husband take off for a 6 month sojourn to Thailand. I am naturally edgey for the dawn to break, so arising 1&1/2 hours earlier than usual, I needed something to settle down with. I grabbed 5 CDs' and randomly put them on the victrola. I was immediately put into a happy swinging mood. What all this verbage leads to is I really found out this morning why Jazz is such an important part of my life. Erroll Garner was playing his lil' 5 foot patootie off and it was obvious he was enjoying every second. I started clicking the greats of Jazz off and each and every one had this same common thread running thru their music. Ella, Miles, Dizzy, Coleman, Peterson, Torme, Sinatra, Bird, Brubeck, et. al. loved what they did, put in the necessary time to master their instruments and didn't really give a RATS' about the bottom line as long as they were performing. Never saw Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, or Wes Montgomery Jump 4 feet in the air, do a split, a 360 * turn all the while playing the same stupid chord, one of the 4 they know. Saw a group on Comedy Centrals old broadcast yesterday and thought the new breed of musicians need a course in Gymnastics to perform. Oh well, this is the rant thread and I'm now in too good of a mood to continue, Oscar Pertersons' trio is sending out a jillion happy vibes. Sounds like fun, Verne. Every so often, the pleasure of music is an essential.

I come from a jazz-loving family (and my aunt and grandfather are both jazz musicians), and I have the same reaction to hearing jazz music, WW. Especially if I haven't heard any for a while. It calms and soothes ...

... and on the other hand, sometimes it excites.

Listening to Oscar Petersons' Christmas CD and waiting for my Gorgus Granddaughter and her friend to quit picking all my Freemont Tangerines. Such a mellow mood. The Sammy Cohn/ Jules Stein Chtistmas Waltz never swung so great.Life is good. WW

I'm a jazz fan too. But on December 8th I thoroughly enjoyed a concert by one of the acrobatic musicians, Bruce Springsteen, appearing in Charlotte. He did a couple slides on his knees across the stage that looked rather risky. Wonder if he's ever slid right off the edge.

Earlier that day I went to the Duke Mansion for a tasting of Champagnes and Holiday wines. Found out it was canceled because the Duke Mansion was without power until that day due to the ice storm Wednesday night. I arrived overdressed at the Boss's concert because I had dressed for the champagne tasting.

Biggest risk getting around town--some of the traffic lights were still out. At night, as a visitor from out-of-town, I didn't realize at first that those intersections were supposed to have traffic lights and went sailing through a couple. The most dangerous intersections had police cars on hand and when I heard policewoman on a bullhorn say "This is a four-way stop," of course I stopped and was more cautious from then on. I intend to write the Charlotte P.D. a letter commending the way they handled the traffic situation during a trying time.

Also went to church in a cold, dark church. People had coats on throughout the service but the Advent music and lessons were beautiful and they did have organ (its own generator for the bellows maybe?)

From the news accounts I saw WOW there was some real damage down there. We're supposed to get the first of this latest bunch of major storms that hit the West Coast in our area starting tonight. Rain.....It's damp right? WW
