Went down to the ranch this morning to check on the critters, cut grass, water plants, that sort of thing. Wind was howling at about 30 knots. No critters in sight, figured they were hiding out in the creek bottom. Cuttin' grass, and all of sudden, here they come, en masse, headed straight for the house. Shut the mower down, and then I hear the truck's horn blaring. The wind has set off the alarm, which has summoned the cattle for feeding. (They don't need feeding this time of year, plenty of green grass all around.) They gather around and start bawlin'. "Take a hike, girls, it ain't gonna happen!" So they go into a funk. Plop down all around the truck. Even the little ones lookin' mournful. Two hours later, I'm showered and ready to leave, and they haven't budged. "Git!" (OK, OK, they start shufflin' out of the way, just SURE that I'm gonna feed anyway.) What a hoot.
Munchin' smoked ham sandwiches and swillin' Maison Nicolas Pinot Noir.

neat story, hotwine! one of my favorite memories of childhood is playing with my grandfather's herd. we got in trouble when we played cowboys and Indians and chased the cows into the woods. They didn't like it when I tried to ride them either...

Very good, madame. Range cube en papillote, with the light alfalfa sauce, eau de cowtank to drink and for dessert, may I suggest the brome flan.

Great stuff, hotwine. I miss the many critters from upstate NY. Ever since I took this apartment in Greenwich Village the only heifers that molest me are, well, let's just say the police haven't finished their clean-up job yet...

Party at the ranch! I always had a soft spot for medium-rare cattle.

A snack for these kids ain't exactly kitty-candy....it's a 400 lb round bale of sweet coastal bermuda. Not to worry, the foreman had given 'em a couple the day before I was there. They were just bein' greedy. And afterall, they HAD been summoned by the honkin' truck horn, so they were just bein' dootiful, comin' fer supper when called.
Split my sides watchin' a grown cow tryin' to interest a Charolais bull in amour. He was bein' awful lazy! "Not tonight, dear, I've got a headache!" He kept shyin' away from her, and she finally just stood there and bellowed at him. Har!
