Sweet enough to appeal to the sugar instinct, but this wine's strength is its backbone. It's a light yet clear red, and has a lot of spice on the bouquet. Also some spice notes in the taste, as well as some honey and orange peel. Overall a wonderful texture in the mouth, finishing fairly hot, some woody tannin still in there. Spent 30 months aging in oak. 17% alcohol. This was 60 FF three years ago when my friend bought it; I tasted the '95 also, at the winery, and it was a dropoff in complexity and overall quality (possibly because that was a mediocre vintage for Banyuls) but the price is now 18 E (about 110 FF). Great as a dessert wine or an aperitif.
