1998 Van Roekel Vinyards, Temecula, Estate Bottled, K Syrah Sirah (50% Syrah, 50% Petite Sirah). Picked this up on our Temecula probe with Lizardbrains last month. The Van Roekel operation offers somewhat light wines in and around the $10 price point. This one was at the high end. It did not offer much on the nose, but our's might have been blunted by three weeks of road trip. Over the lips and through the gums, it got better. Nice heft, it weighs in at 13.8%. Dark black fruit and spice with smooth tannin crossed the palate, and it offered a nice finish. We enjoyed it with aged goat cheese from Westfield Farms, and extra sharp Vermont cheddar. It would also make a nice afternoon quaffer. Good value. Cute name.
