1996 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Les Jalets, Crozes Hermitage ($14). We've talked about this one before, but I wanted to make this a separate post. Methinks things are changing. We've been laying down more and more wines for "a year or three" that we used to drink right away. This is not confined to any specific area, and includes wines from the Rhone, Collio, Tuscany, California, Washington, and Oz.

The '96 PJA Les Jalets was wonderful. Lovely aroma of black fruit and spice, that carried over to the tongue tip. Deep blackberry, plumy, raisiny, smokey spicy nuances in the fruity and earthy complexity. Light oak and tannins with the slightest edge was included in what raced across the palate and contributed to a languishing finish. I've come to the conclusion that baby is among those that have to lay down for at least a little while.

This splendid wine matched perfectly with a most romantic meal tonight. The table was set with two used bottles of 2000 Georges DuBoeuf, Milenage; that we have filled with red lamp oil and stopped with those ceramic corks with wicks that are making the rounds. The centerpiece is a ceramic basket overflowing with very nice artificial grapes. In this setting with no other light, we enjoyed a meal of lamb loin chops broiled with OO and garlic; fresh baguette with OO, garlic, and fine herbs; and eggplant salad. Very, very nice. Made you think you were in the South of France again. Sigh!

PS: Applied for Social Security today.

Congrats, IK, on both the delightful dinner and the milestone.

Better watch it IK. I had a friend who did almost the exact same thing you two whipper-snappers did on their 60th and he was changing diapers agin' on his 61st. (giggle) WW
