Luigi's Restaurant was having a tasting of German wines last week but not Riesling--trying to get people to sample other varietals such as Sylvaner and Gewurztraminer, etc.
This was one of two red wines and the one I prefered. This variety is the most widely planted red wine grape in Austria, and second behind Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) in Germany. It seems to have originated in Austria (not Portugal). It is a high-yielding vine that produces slightly sweet light red and rose' wines.

This is from Weingut Stauffer, Rheinhessen, Germany. 100% Blauer Portugieser

I liked this for its light, fruity charm.
