- VouvrayHead - 12-17-2006 A tasting I hosted at the store I work at this weekend: Segura Viudas brut Cava- awesome stuff for $6.99 Bright, fresh, a bit green... Great to toy with (Chambord, anyone?) Domaine Chandon Brut Classic- $15.99 Really nice, rather soft, nice pear or other gentle fruitiness. a wee touch of grassiness in the background, but great for the money. Rivals Gruet blancs de noir for domestic bubbles. Gruet Demi-Sec $13.99 Not as sweet as I thought it might be. OK, but not nearly as well-defined as their fabulous brut and blancs de noir. Remy Pannier rose bubbles- $8.49 Rather insipid. too sweet and not enough acid. light strawberry. Sold a bunch anyway. Duval Leroy n.v. brut- Well, just terrific for a $30 champagne. Rather soft, and touch of sweetness for brut, a gentle pear or apple fruit with really long and full finish. A lot of people tought it was similar, just better made, to the Domaine Chandon, and I can certainly see that. Darn W.S. gave it a rather silly 94 pts. and #41 on their top 100 list, so I'm sure it'll be $45 next yeat. oh well, great while it's $30! The only bubbly I'd prefer to it at that price is Schraamsberg vintage Blanc de Noir. Cheers! I'm looking forward to New Year's Eve. - brappy - 12-18-2006 Is that Segura Viudas with the lead emblem. I've not seen it so cheap since at least 1990. Any way always fun to drink, especially at a party with nonwine people. Duval Leroy has some great bubbly. All price points and types. Great juice. mark - winoweenie - 12-18-2006 Tankee dere ole VH. Am picking up my bubbly for presents tomorrow and will definately get the Duval. WW - VouvrayHead - 12-18-2006 Brappy, the Segura Viudas is their regular brut. The one with the pewter base and emblem is Cuvee Heredad or something like that. That's much better wine, but run $18 bucks or so. Got lucky enough to get 3 magnums of that Heredad for $25 a piece and opened them at a post-Thankgiving gathering of multitudes... WW, hope you enjoy the Duval, let me know what you think! - winoweenie - 01-01-2007 Opened a couple of these suckers fer daybreak today and agree they are delicious bubblies. Not sure I'd put them dudes in the stratosphere that the WS has. Would have a hard time putting them afore the PJs we has a few ago. A nvery solid bottle that is 35 down here. WW - VouvrayHead - 01-01-2007 Haven't had the n/v PJ in a while, will try it again next Sunday brunch! |
