Born, raised and educated in San Francisco, Mildred Howie now lives in the
heart of the north coast wine country, Sonoma County. A long-time radio/TV
promotional specialist, Howie opened her own public relations firm in 1971
to serve, primarily, as a writer/consultant to the food, wine and
hospitality industries. As one of the first wine publicists in the field,
many of the programs she initiated became standard procedure for newer and
younger wineries. Her column, WINE WORDS was begun in 1979 in the Healdsburg Tribune, and still continues, weekly. She also is a regular contributor to WINES & VINES, PRACTICAL WINERY, STEPPIN' OUT, and CALIFORNIA VISITORS' REVIEW. In 1980 she co-authored the book PRIDE OF THE WINERIES. In community affairs, Howie is the founder of the Russian River Wine Road, and co-founder of the Sonoma County Wine Library. In 1992 she was named "Friend of Agriculture" by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, and in 1993 The Luther Burbank Foundation, through Salute Sonoma named Howie "Living Treasure in Literature". The National Academy of Wine Communications, in 1995, recognized her for outstanding contributions to wine journalism.
