Finally picked up my 2002 order several weeks ago and still have some of the 2001 Sarah's Blend from Southeastern Australia so decided to compare them side-by-side. (Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot blend) Both are listed as 14.5% alcohol. Identical in appearance. Dark purple with dark red/purple rim. Opaque. Both taste hot from alcohol and have spice accents. The 2002 version tastes riper, plummier and has a slightly gritty or chewy character. I think I prefered the 2000 vintage over 2001, and 2001 over 2002. Seems to be going further toward an extracted, very ripe style and possibly more wood influence. Will probably pass up the 2003 version. I still have the 2002 S2 Cabernet Sauvignon from Marquis-Philips to try (3 bottles) and will hope for better luck with them. I'm still a big fan of Henry's Drive Cabernet Sauvignon which is also a Sparky Marquis product.
Had the Sarah's Blend with beef stir fry with green and red bell pepper slices, onion slices and light Soy Sauce and also with sloppy joes another night.

Could relative maturity be a factor?

It may be a minor factor. I tried the 2000 when it was quite young and found it tasty and attractive for immediate consumption. I bought a full case of the 2002 and still have some bottles of the 2001 so will have the opportunity to retaste them as they mature.

I think the Sara's Blend will, after a few years in the bottle, become a swan for '01 and '02 but the '02 shiraz I fear is doomed to be a spinster.
