I love ports! Last night, I tried the Montevina Amador County Zinfandel Port. (Not a "true" port as my dad would say, b/c it's not made in Portugal, but still very good none the less.) It was smooth with a chocolate and black cherry taste to it. Not bad at $13.99. Has anyone else tried any good California "ports"?

Heed your father. Parents can pass down the accumulated wisdom of the ages, for better or worse. Georgie's the real port lover here. Maybe she'll chime in.

Quady Starboard Batch 88 is a very nice California Port at a very reasonable price at about $16.

Another critter on the loose is Late Harvest Zinfandel (or other red grapes) that all by their lonesome climb up to 18% alcohol without any fortification. This sets them in between Port and some main season zinfandels. I love the one from Tobin James in Paso Robles.

KC, father always knows best- great man

Girl, Does Capitol Cellars carry any CA ports? I just got an email from them that mentions they opened a new shop in Roseville.

I do love Port but I'm not much help with information. I just love them all! I guess Hardy's Whiskers Blake is my favorite.

Kc, first I've heard that one. There's a couple new wine bars... haven't seen any new shops. fyi- raley's tends to have better selection and prices than albertson's

IK, I have a late harvest zin from Ridge, 2000, and a 2000 from Castoro Cellars. Isn't it a bit too early to open those yet?

- Innkeeper - 03-17-2004

No, not too early, but since they are not fortified, they will continue to improve in the bottle.

- Tastevin - 03-17-2004

Hello Innkeeper, seems as if you're saying fortified wines don't improve in bottle(????. T.

CG, revisted this thread and decided to look in the cellar and found some Really older Calif Ports. 1984 Prager and a Ficklin Tawney that probably pre-dates it. Put them in the staging area and as soon as I have someone over to help will open these here suckers. WW

Me, I am sipping an Offley Tawny right now--nice, or should I say offly good?

- Kcwhippet - 03-17-2004

1976 Barros Colheita - mm mm good.

- californiagirl - 03-18-2004

KC, that would be a 1977 Barros... and yes... quite scrumptious. Although there is still 1/2 bottle yet, and I promised I wouldn't touch it! Silly me. Don't know what he's saving it for???
