Tonight I had a dessert wine, that while I can't exactly remember who made it, the bottle said something about it being made from Merlot in a Port style, flavored with chocolate. Whatever it was, it was just delicious. Tasted like a Port until the finish when a lovely chocolate taste surfaced. Yummy stuff!

Horrors!!!!!

- Thomas - 09-27-2003

Georgie, are you makin' a joke?

- Botafogo - 09-27-2003

No, guys, he is not. That stuff is bottled under various names by the Sonoma Port Works (we sell it under the name Deco) and it is actually good...

- Georgie - 09-27-2003

Would I lie to you? Thanks for backing me up Roberto! and it IS good!

- hotwine - 09-27-2003

Port WITH chocolate, sure. But chocolate-flavored Port?? Egads!

Hey, don't knock it 'til you've tried it! It tastes a heck of a lot better than okra, I can tell ya that!

- Thomas - 09-27-2003

Man, I had a sauteed okra at a local vegetarian Indian restaurant (curried and all) that would make even Georgie think about the fine vegetable as, well, a fine vegetable.

As for the chocolate "Port:" still yuch to me. First of all, how can the chocolate be quality--or is it really chocolate? Second, as Hotsie says, why do it that way? Third, Merlot Port?

Nothing better than fresh okra fried in a cornbread batter...... yum. Or slimy okra in a seafood gumbo.....yum. Or pickled okra....yum.

Chocolate Port - YIKES!

- Botafogo - 09-27-2003

As to the how, they extract the essence of chocolate with high proof alcohol then use that to fortify the wine, simple and the flavors are very integrated. I too was aghast untill I tried it. The Merlot bit is new on me and is truly a sad indicator of how over planted that varietal is. The one we sell is made from Tinto Nacional and Touriga.

Roberto, I'm glad that somebody respectable on this Board agrees with me. If I can get a hold of the bottle from the friend who served it, I'll get the details. Maybe I'll bring a bottle to Glenora to get these old pooh-pooh-ers to give it a try.

- Drew - 09-28-2003

Sheesh....you're always sending Roberto to the corner and now, cause he agrees with you, he's "teachers pet".

" Some-one Repectible "?????That's like saying Carrie Nation only wanted some firewood.ww

Roberto is not a teacher's pet. Teachers do not have favorites. (har har) He has just done his homework. As a result he is better educated than some of you others when it comes to chocolate flavored Port! Well, all except for Drew who is always working on a research paper! Drew, the winery started with a "T". I'll find out what it ws this week. Thanks for the information. I'm going to try to buy some of this treat for the holidays.

- Thomas - 09-28-2003

Georgie, why don't you buy a lot of it for your beloved holiday--Halloween. Give it to the kiddies as a "chocolate" treat; that should keep them from your door next year, if the parents find out. Of course, the risk is that the parents don't find out and you get even more kiddies at the door next year.

In fact, buy all of it, so we won't have to worry about it flooding the market...

- Georgie - 09-28-2003

(Hands on hips) Well, you can just laugh and scoff all you want to; I'll be enjoying my choco-port.

Can see the headlines now " Teach arrested for lacing kids chocolate milk with brandy. Molestation not suspected, just a nasty disposition . Has rare disease called Pumpkinphobia."ww

- Georgie - 09-28-2003

A nasty disposition! Aw c'mon! You try 30 years of Halloween parades; either sweating or freezing to death, trying to keep 25 kids from tripping over costumes, crashing into others because they can't see through their masks, swinging swords and devil pitchforks at each other, crying because something on the costume fell apart, peeing a butterfly suit (yes, that happened) getting stung by yellowjackets(yes that happened too!) and being totally out of control and high on sugar and you'd be less than Good Witch Glinda yourself, honey. And the only thing I've ever threatened to put in their milk is paregoric! The brandy goes in teacher's cup! Phew! I feel so much better now.

- Georgie - 09-28-2003

And for the record, we believe that the maker of the dessert wine that I so innocently mentioned to begin this thread was Touriga. Roberto knew it.
