Hello,

I am a new member. I will be bringing a dessert to a wine dinner. I would like to know what wine would be best for an almond torte. Is champagne a possibility as well?

Thank you.

I think that Champagne might be insufficiently sweet to work well with an almond torte. I think that an auslese riesling would go well (sweeter riesling might be too much) but I've never had any of the desert wines made with other grapes so my perspective is limited.

You can get sweet Champagne, starting with Extra Dry (this is NOT a put on), moving to Demi-Sec, and finally Sec.

Funny you should ask this question! In March I had almond cake at a fancy NYC restaurant and ordered a ten-year tawny port to accompany it. The slight nuttiness of the port was a great match! The waitress also commented on how well older port goes with the almond dessert. You might get the same result with a sherry or madeira wine with a nutty flavor, but I'm not as familiar with them so cannot recommend a specific type of sherry, etc.

Amantillado Sherry tastes like almonds to me. But then, a fine Bual Madeira is quite nutty too.

Don't know how sweet the almond torte is, but the above should work, as would a sweet sparkling wine--Clairette de Die comes to mind, if you can find one. It is a muscat/clairette sweet sparkler that does well with cakes and pastries.

Well, I happen to know that you can get a Clairette de Die at is-wine (www.is-wine.com)! And a lovely sparkler it is. Foodie, do you like this one yourself? I know you have reservations about Muscat.

Shortwiner, you are correct: muscat is not on my list--something about the qualities of that grape that I simply cannot warm to. But I do recognize when a wine has merit, and when a wine and food pairing works. I am even willing to drink muscat when that happens--in small quantities of course.
