what do people think makes a good pairing for gorgonzola?

- Kcwhippet - 01-05-2009

Sauternes or Bordeaux or Champagne.

Rosso d'Montalcino.

Depends: there's real gorgonzola and there's the American brand, which has little relationship to the real thing.

For the real stuff, I've found that dessert wines (especially noble rot kinds) do quite well, but so do some styles of Port.

An Italian Passito style wine might also work, but I haven't had that experience.

For the American kind, IK's suggestion works.

A wine and cheese pairing seminar at a Nantucket Wine Festival some years ago suggested Sauvignon Blanc with bleu cheese to cut the saltiness of the cheese. I still find that an acceptable pairing. Also, David Bruce Pinot Noir (which is rather full bodied) works okay with some bleu cheese although I haven't tried it specifically with Gorgonzola.
