I purchased a 1991 Storybook Mountain Vineyard "Howell Mountain" Zinfandel the other night, can anyone offer tasting notes?

I found this from a tasting 5 1/2 years ago at Wine Spectator:

1991 Zinfandel Howell Mountain - Storybook Mountain - $15.00 - 87 points - Napa - Tasted 10/15/94 - Austere with a tight, firm and focused core of black cherry, raspberry and spice notes.

The only way you will know for sure, since the true taste is determined by your palete not someone else's, will be to pop the cork and taste the wine yourself.

Drew:
Where did you purchase your storybook wine?

I opened the 1991 Storybook Mountain Zin the other night in Ocean City Maryland. That "story" though started bad and ended bad. From the start I was hit with a weedy odor as well as a strong alcohol nose that never disapated (bottle lists 13.5%). The wine was deep garnet in color, with a tawny edge, med. texture. Taste was somewhat tart with leather tones, very little fruit and very astringent...almost burning at the top of the palete! I let it open for 2 hours, never did improve.....threw it out! The cork looked good, some staining about two thirds and no indication of leakage. Any thoughts as to why so bad or just one of those bad bottles?

I have never found Storybook wines appealing, personally. Hard, tart, lean, and never coming to fruition.

Same here, Bucko. I haven't had a Storybook Mountain I've liked since the late 80's.
