2001 Blackstone, California, Zinfandel ($9.99 Supermarket). 13.5% alcohol. Red berries and plums (!) on the nose and upfront. Some spice and restrained oak make up simple supple structure crossing the palate, and finish was nice. Wouldn't be surprised if they used the whole 25% available with merlot. Would call it an OK everyday drinker, but not in my top ten under ten.

Matched with country pork ribs rubbed with Lawry salt, peppermill, and our barbeque rub; and baked one a half hours till crisp. They were napped with a mild, sweetish barbeque sauce (definitely neither hot nor spicy). The wine didn't quite hold up to it.
Certainly not what we expected.
