Has anyone tried Constantino's Cigar Zin? If so, what are your opinions of it? Is it a true zin? Thanks, Lori

- Jason - 10-01-1999

Yeah, good stuff. Not overly jammy, more in the claret style.

- Thomas - 10-02-1999

The cigar, or the Zin?

- Randy Caparoso - 10-02-1999

I also recently tried it. And even though I'm always extremely skeptical about wines with gimmicky names, I was impressed. Good berryish, smoky oaked flavors; medium-full, but not heavy (nor hugely intense), and some flesh in the middle. Nicely crafted for simple wood grilled strips of beef, a loin of lamb, and maybe some roasted peppers. The cigars -- well, not exactly my cup of tea with any red wine.

- Jerry D Mead - 10-03-1999

Mitch Cosentino is a very old friend of mine (I knew him when he was making wine in a garage in Modesto from Sacramento County fruit, selling wine for the local Gallo wholesaler and teaching wine appreciation at the local JC...his most popular wine in those days was called "Robin's Glow," a blush made from Carignane and named for a then girlfriend), so I don't have to call him "Mister" Cosentino.

I rag on him every chance I get for getting involved in the wine/cigar fruad perpetrated by Marvin Shanken and the cigar producers.

Don't you just love it when restaurants do "Chardonnay & Cigar" tastings? Yuk!

No wine goes with cigars...Cognac maybe (the high alcohol deadens the tastebuds so you don't get as much cigar!).

I'm aware that I'm inviting a rebuttal tirade from Bucko.

- Randy Caparoso - 10-03-1999

Well, obviously I'm on your side, Curmdudgeon. I have a great deal of respect for Shanken and his publications -- they work as hard or harder than anyone to put out exceptional products -- and I certainly wouldn't want to criticize the way so many people get their legal kicks. But cigars make me extremely uncomfortable, having known several people who have suffered the consequences as a direct result of their predliction for a "good cigar." As one doctor recently told me through his voice making gadget (don't know what they're called), "I was stupid, stupid, stupid."

- Thomas - 10-04-1999

Cigars and wine is about as smart as pairing shoe leather with wine, perhaps as tasty too.

As for Randy's comments; I am forever flabbergasted that there still are people who smoke cigarettes, let alone cigars.

- n144mann - 10-04-1999

Well I am glad to see I am not the only one who feels this way!! We have a large walk in humidor at the store, and my boss has been telling me I need to try some of the cigars so that I am more familiar with them, and better able to help the customers. I told him that I love my job, and I would do a lot for him, but I will not do windows, dishes (long story) or cigars. Anything else is up for negotiation.

- Randy Caparoso - 10-05-1999

Quite a quandry, Nancy. Now I'll tell you something personal: Back in 1988 I took some examinations towards finals given by the Court of Master Sommeliers. Unfortunately, I was completely turned off by their aggressive promotion of cigars, and the requirement of firsthand knowledge and experience of cigar service. Specifically because of that, I have not pursued that title any further. It's a sacrifice, because so many of my colleagues believe strongly in it; in fact, revel in it. I won't insult anyone by telling them what I really think. But what does being a sommelier have to do with a tobacco product? I truly wish I knew.

Needless to say, we do not run "cigar friendly" restaurants. Boy-oh-boy, have we we suffered some barbs (from so-called connoisseurs of the "good life") for that! But if someone wants to light up around a Roy's, we politely ask them to step outside.

Perhaps you can pass this comment onto your new boss.

- n144mann - 10-05-1999

Well Randy, as usual I can count on you for encouragement .....and perhaps I will pass the comment along should the subject present itself again. Thanks.

Nancy

- Thomas - 10-05-1999

Watch out how you say it, Nancy. To ask someone to step outside could get you a black eye!!!

- n144mann - 10-06-1999

Foodie, I have never had to ask anyone not to smoke in the store... most of our customers know that. But yes, you always need to treat the customers with the most sincere politeness, and even then, they can be offended. Should I ever run into one that I felt threatened by, I am sure I could get one of the gentlemen in the store to help me...since I am one of the only three women who work there, they are all quite protective. But thanks for the warning.
Nancy

- Thomas - 10-06-1999

I fear the feeble attempt at making a joke was lost on you, Nancy. When two guys decide to come to blows, one of them is often heard to say, "step outside."

But if you have to explain a joke, it doesn't sound like much of one does it...

- n144mann - 10-06-1999

Sorry foodie....I know that is what you brawling men say.....but since I am not a guy, wasn't sure where you were wanting to go with that.

You'll just have to forgive me this one...it has been a hell of a long day!! You know the type.....the spouse is mad at you...the boss has about three sheets of assignments for you to finish in an hour, the wine reps are complaining because the boss is out and he hasn't given you permission to make the decisions, and the kids break your favorite piece of crystal...and that is the good part of the day...

Ahhh...thank heavens for a quiet corner and a computer!! and of course....a comforting glass of port!!

Nancy

Well, aren't there a bunch of sissies hanging around here?!? }:> I would quote Jesse Ventura in The Predator, when he was trying to get some buddies to take a chew of tobacco, but then I might be scalped by the rabble.......

There is nothing better than a cool Seattle night out on the deck, a snifter of VSOP Cognac (XO is wasted) to warm the bones, and a fine Macanudo cigar to ease the stressors of the week.

I'm surprised that the afficionados of fine wine, fine spirits and fine foods here are not also into fine cigars. The shame of it all...... bunch of sissies......

Bucko

- Thomas - 10-07-1999

Well, there is the matter of my cigar and Monica...but that one got out of hand...

- n144mann - 10-07-1999

No sissies here....just people smart enough to know better.

As for Gov. Ventura....and it pains me to call him that.....if you are reduced to quoting HIM from anything...it really ought to tell you something, Honey. Perhaps you have too much smoke in the rafters...

<<as for the matter of my cigar and Monica>>

Well I am having to use a lot of self-control Foodie, but I don't think I dare go there.... Would likely get me in trouble again....... <grin>

- Thomas - 10-07-1999

Nancy, I swear: I never had a cigar with that woman. It was Bucko, he and all that Cognac and wrestling crowd!!!

- n144mann - 10-07-1999

Oh,I trust you foodie...really I do!! <wink wink> I am sure that you, like myself, are ALWAYS wrongly accused!! As I have said before, I am perpetually in trouble....but honestly, I never deserve to be. I am usually quite innocent. You will vouch for me right Randy? (just say yes, dear)

As for it being Bucko's fault...well.... we all know he is SUCH a bad influence on everyone! IN fact, he is such a bad influence, I have been re-thinking my idea of letting him be baby New Year. ( the champagne thread, remember ) In fact, I think perhaps we ought to forget the idea of having next years Millennium party at his house totally, and have it at my place. I am more centrally located after all. Besides, if it is my house, I can kick his butt out on the deck when he pulls out those stinky cigars. And I will warn you Bucko...I am tall and rather slender....but I am quick...bet I can wrestle your behind out the door EVEN if you resist! No sissies here. No tobacco of any kind for Curmy for nearly a decade now...might have something to do with the Big C and the oxygen canula stuck up my nose and those funny tanks I have to drag everywhere with me...but I defend to the DEATH everyone's right to smoke anything they like.

Hell, I'm so anti-smoking now I wouldn't even light up a joint...and now there's something that does go with a Mendocino evening.
