2000 FOUR VINES ZINFANDEL, SONOMA
14.5% alcohol $18.99 locally
Deep crimson color with some brilliance.
Nose of dark berries and plumskins. Similar flavors with an underpinning from the oak. Slight chewiness in the mouth. Nice as an everyday wine but not really special.

2005 SEGHESIO OLD VINE ZINFANDEL, SONOMA COUNTY
15.3% Alcohol
Darker and more opaque than the Four Vines Zin. Tastes ripe, bordering on jammy. Concentrated blackberry flavor with some fine tannins.

2004 DeLOACH RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY ZINFANDEL, GAMBOGI RANCH (I bought this to compare at home with the Hook and Ladder Gambogi Ranch that Cecil DeLoach is now producing).
14.9% alcohol $32.40 with tax
Dark purple color; opaque in glass. Some viscosity. Blackberries and Asian spices with a grippy tannin texture. Label claims aging potential. I had this with beef stir fry one night and with leftovers of turkey, rice and gravy another night. I thought the wine actually improved after being open nine days!! (recorked and refrigerated)

2005 HOOK & LADDER THIRD ALARM RESERVE ZINFANDEL, GAMBOGI RANCH, SONOMA COUNTY, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY
14.5% alcohol; viscous
Pretty close in color to the 2004 DeLoach with dark purple and a crimson rim. IMHO this wine had more chewiness, more character and more flavor than the DeLoach. The Hook & Ladder has a lot of presence yet seems a bit lighter (in a good sense) than the DeLoach. Tastes like a blen of red and black berries. Smoother texture. Both wines held up for several days after opening, recorked and refrigerated.
470 cases of single-vineyard 100% Zinfandel wine hand-made from grapes planted in 1909 by Annchise Gambogi. The berries were open-fermented in small stainless steel tanks and "punched down" by hand to maximize extraction. Aged for 11 mos. in American oak.

When I inquired about my other favorite single-vineyard Zin from DeLoach's former days, the Barbieri Vineyard, I was informed that the Zin vines were pulled up for replanting, possibly to Pinot Noir. A shame.
