1998 Bayliss & Fortune Vineyards, Mendocino County, Zinfandel (approx $15.00). Those of you old enough may remember that back before cabernet became popular, zinfandel was king. Unfortunately it was wines like this that hastened cab's popularity, as winemakers vied for who could make the hugest zin. I was one, apparently of a very few, who was in hog heaven in this environment.

This wine weighs in at 15% alcohol. It is made from grapes from 60 year old vines at a very high brix. The grapes were fermented on their skins for fifteen days for maximum extraction. It hits you inbetween the eyes with a massive burst of fruit and an extra power pack of acid and tannin that will improve the sucker for a long time to come. It was very lightly oaked.

Matched it with our last smoked barbeque of the year. We smoked a pork butt yesterday, and it took a long, long time; meaning we had a very, very late meal of the pork chipped into a wonderful sauce of Southwest Georgia/Southeast Alabama origin. The zin sat up and shot the BBQ in between the eyes!

Unfortunately, the wine comes from an end lot. Believe it was originally priced in the $20s. No more will be made. What remains is in the hands of Grove Street Brokers. If you are interested, contact my man Craig at: craigwineman@nidlink.com

This huge Zin is everything IK says it is! We tried a bottle tonight and even my wife said let me have another glass, this is GOOD. (She does not normally drink Big Zins....)

If you can still find any of this juice, grab a hold and drink it. Very nice, very big, fruit all over the place, super-great Zinfandel for sure!!
