Some brief notes from a quick trip into town to spend CD vouchers. (Happily, I had time to test out the monthly offerings at the Winemakers Centre, too.)

2002 Alpha Domus Semillon: Great floral nose, very smooth, with lime-y, slightly honeyed flavours. A nice drop from a fairly underused varietal in New Zealand. (There was just three on the stores shelves.) NZ$18.00

2004 Palliser Estate Riesling: Huge nose, tons of citrus, green apple and honeysuckle. Well balnced, not too acidic, and a pleasure to drink. Reminds me of why I was on such a huge riesling kick a year or two back. I'd drink this one, even though it's just a baby. (The winemaker thinks it'll go 8 years at least.) NZ$21.30

2004 Palliser Estate Sauvignon Blanc: Quite suprising, this one. Not at all the "jump out of the glass" '04 savvie I've been used too this season. Much less acidic than most SB's, long finish, classy and smooth. Interesting. NZ$25.00

2004 Waipara Springs Lightly Oaked Chardonnay: A subtle nose on this decent, citrusy chardonnay. Probably a good summer drop, but I've tried better. I wouldn't turn down a glass, though... if you were buying. NZ$19.80

2003 Waipara Springs Pinot Noir: If only I was allowed to cuss on this board... I'll settle for "This is a FLIPPing good pinot!". Mouthwatering nose, masses of plums, cherries and smokey oak on the palate. Savoury, smooth and moreish, great mouthfeel and a long, long finsh. I'm running out of superatives, but as you can tell, I kinda liked this wine. NZ$25. HUGE Tick O' Approval!

2002 Alpha Domus Merlot/Cabernet: And we finished on another little beauty. Powerful nose, much firmer oak, withobvious cellaring potential. Gamey, leather notes and even a touch of "roasted meat" characters. Great value, too. NZ$19.00

Remember when I was all tentative about reds? Times do change, huh?

Well hello there Skeets and thanks for the tout on the Pinot. Also, appreciate your restraint on the descriptive adjectives. Flippin' be good! Have never understood the need for profanity whenced describing great juice. Lots of other descriptors are FAR more effective as it lets us use our imagination.
