I just bought a case of this lovely wine (Parker 93pts) and have been trying to find a website on this winery but can't seem to find anything...any comments on this wine?

Can anyone help me with this or point me to a site with more specific info on this winery?

The winemaker is Sparky Marquis in partnership with his wife Sarah Marquis. Dan Philips imports/distributes? the wines through Grateful Palate, based in Oxnard, CA.
Sparky Marquis also makes wine for some vineyards in Australia that he does not own (Parson's Flat, a cabernet sauvignon/shiraz blend is one of those). See more at http:/www.henrysdrive.com/winemakers.htm

rick,

i have some of the S2 myself, and just had the first bottle earlier this week. wow! this is good, concentrated stuff. i think it's just a notch below the '01 henry's drive reserve cab, which is produced by the same winemakers as marquis philips. parker gave the S2 a 93+ rating, but later said that the wine improved so much overnight that he should have rated it a 95. i felt the wine definitely was even better after a night with the vacuvin. will be trying the next bottle of S2 in 2005. enjoy!

I don't have access to Parker's comments on his site; if anyone does, would they mind cutting and pasting his full commentary regarding this wine in response??

thanks.

I have the issue of the Wine Advocate that covers his ratings of the MP wines and will post when I get home tonight.

From the Wine Advocate, Issue #143, "2001 Cabernet Sauvignon S2 (100% Cabernet) was barrel-fermented in 100% new oak and aged in a combination of French and American barrels. It exhibits a spicy perfume of vanilla, black currants, sweet cherries, licorice, and cedar. Dense, opulent, expansive, and full-bodied, it is surprisingly fresh and well-delineated. I re-tasted this wine after it had been opened for 24 hours and double decanted, and it revealed sweeter tannin as well as greater fruit intensity, an attribute that should serve these wines well in their aging process. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2017."
Robert Parker. Rating 93+

Drew..
Thanks for the info. Sounds like a great bang for the buck as I picked up a case for about $19.50 + tax.

Missed this posting originally as I was out of town.As I type this I'm tasting this wine in all its' full-blown glory. Did any of you pick-up a hint of dill on the finish? Maybe the tannins are making it tough for me to evaluate. Am putting this sucker in the cellar opened and will repost tomorrow nite. Hope I like it better as I bought a box without my normal tasting. Going to open a 2000 petite Boredux for this eve. WW

WW,

if you find the S2 not to your liking, i'd be happy to take it off your hands.

always willing to help

Lots better after 24 hours of inhaling. A very atypical Aussie cab IMHO. Would have pegged this hummskie as a 2nd tier Rutherford cab. It's put away News-boogs so I guess I'll keep the babes. If'n you really need more let me know. WW
