1997 Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot (46%, 36%, 18%), Coonawarra ($12.15 [Pops]). Being from Coonawarra, you might expect a monster, but though potent, it was made to be approachable. This Bordeaux/Rhone blend from the Land of Oz starts off quite fragrant on the nose, gives you a blast of spicy fruit up front, nice exotic complexity with semi-tamed tannin and supporting acid on the palate, and a finish that you want more of. Would it improve from another year or two in the rack? Sure, if you can't take it. Matched marvelously with a sliced, grillpanned boneless sirloin, and salad with blue cheese. Would definitely try it again.

The '99 is a little different. Obtained from SHWC for $13. The proportion is now or was then 61-26-13, and the weigh in is 13.5%. Dense purple color for the eye. Fresh fruit aromas on the nose and upfront. The palate is tight, with blackcurrant flavors and reasonable oak. Firm tannins and nice finish. Matched with Belgian Beef Stew, and salad with blue cheese dressing. You guessed it; wonderful!

if you like the blends try to find a bottle of Penfolds Old Vine Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre. A beauty for the price.
Or another beauty that will not disapoint is the Penfolds Bin 389 Shiraz/Cabernet.
