2001 Water Wheel Vineyards, Bendigo, Cabernet Sauvignon ($14.99 SHWC). It’s another powerhouse in a bottle in the second tier from Oz. This is a very well balanced wine with fruit, alcohol (14.5%), acid, and tannin in sync for a wine that is just fine now; but will get better over the next two or three years. The wine gives you a big dose of varietal Cassis on the nose and upfront. More fruit, earthy complexity, and chewy tannin cross the palate. The lingering finish is one to enjoy. We matched it with diagonally sliced grillpanned boneless sirloin steak, rolls, and salad. It was almost, but not quite, too much wine for the dinner. Mother emphatically insisted that it was just fine, thank you.

Will have to seek that one out, thanks IK.

Killed the second one tonight. Matched it with grilledpanned porterhouse steak, and salad with bluecheese dressing. All wonderful. The wine was even a tad better than the first one; giving us the idea that it has a couple of more years to peak. Will be getting more.
