Santa Lucia Highlands
13.5% alcohol; $27 a half-bottle at an expensive D.C. restaurant
Color: translucent dark ruby
Nose: black cherries, Damson plums, violets
Taste: follows nose; mildest hint of spice;
smooth, lingering, very pleasant finish; almost ethereal quality.
Perhaps not the best match for delicate crab cake and veal marsala, but to my mind the most inviting of the half bottles on menu. I thoroughly enjoyed the wine and noted that two other tables near me were also having the same wine. The waiter indicated that it is generally quite popular with the restaurant customers.
