Hello,

New to the board. I've got a bottle of Volnay premier Cru 1998 which I bought at the end of one of my very first wine tastings. I tried to spit and not drink and everything but it all got a little bit out of hand and the rather ruthless lady in the cellar (I was on a bit of a road trip in Burgundy) encouraged me to buy it.

I remember very little about what she said (i.e. should I drink it now/in a few years) and frankly I spent a fair whack on it (probably more than I should have done - she was very skilled) and I generally don't want to waste it as I do remember it being rather nice (although it was towards the end of the tasting...)

Any thoughts?

The maker or dealer is, I believe, Patriarche Pere & Fils which I've heard differing reports about - just ended up there with a Sunday afternoon to kill in Beaune and very little local knowledge.

Patriarch is a"negotiant" wine blender--I've never tasted any of their own wines, if that is what this one is. It is likely ready to drink or even ready to enter its downward sprial.

If it's good, it's velvety and seductive, which is a mark of Volnay wines.

Open it, drink it, and determine whether or not you like it; nothing else matters.

Cheers - very helpful. I think I'm sure it won't see the other other side of Christmas...
