My boyfriend is finishing up his PhD in one week, I have a very nice meal planned...wild mushroom risotto with prawns, lobster and truffel oil. My boyfriend knows a lot about wine, and loves good wines... he is somewhat of the wine god compared to me. I am trying to learn, but have had little success. Anyway, i am looking for a wine to not only go with this dinner... but something nice and special that he will like. I know he is into reislings. I would like something not too expensive, but not cheap either. You know, something for a special occassion... he has spent the past 5 years of his life working on this PhD... and it is almost over (thank god).

Kind of eclectic menu. You said he likes riesling.If you need to stick to rieslings, I would think Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Dry Riesling would be safe. Its about 9$. I think, though, if the prawns and lobster meat is served over the mushroom risotto with a truffle oil-based sauce, a light body, inexpensive red like a Carneros 2001 Hangtime pinot noir (about $12) might be a nice alternative. Any of the above will cost less than the prawns, lobster and truffle oil. Actually,since you describe him as knowlegeable, you may want buy one of each, chill 'em and let your guy select the wine when you serve the meal. Save the other for another evening or later that night! Have fun.

H Allio and welcome to the Wine Board. Those are good suggestions. I think this meal sort of cries out for bubbly. A Spanish Extra Dry Cava would fill the bill at less than $15. Incidentally "Extra Dry" means "Slightly Off Dry."

If he's really fussy, I might just ask him to choose the wine for this very special meal. I'm sure he will love you for all the effort you're putting into the dinner, and that way you won't have to worry about the wine!
