Freds' dad Ed decided to plant a little plot of Cabernet in 1990 for their own pleasure. This benchland Alexander cab is a real mouth-full. Deep ruby. A restrained nose of red fruits, cassis, violets, and a smidgen of vanilla combine to make this first bottling something special. Bottled unfiltered and unfined, this is remarkably supple now but has the backbone to age another 20 years gracefully. Freds' usual sure hand and winemaking skills show thru in this difficult vintage. 92/90.

This wine is really developing into a keen bottle. The nose has come along, the tannins are starting to soften and lots of personality is at the fore. This will never hit the classic number but it will give any lover of powerful, fruit-driven, low-oaked cabs a ton of pleasure. Take this hummer up to 92/92. 14.7% alc. WW

This bottle has really made major strides since the last one tasted. Powerful nose of red fruits, cassis, plums, and vanilla. Still a small core of fine-grained tannins to resolve but tis' almost at the top of its' game. Finish has gone to a 4+ lapper. Have to kivk this baby up to a solid 93. WW

Opened another for dinner last nite to go with marinated tri-tip. Nose has improved and this sucker is really hitiing its' stride. Maybe another years worth of soft tannins to shed but no sense in tallyin'. Very enjoyable stuff. No scoring change. WW

Has to be in the top 5-10 bottlings from this uneven vintaage. Had another with lunch yesterday and as my friends in Georgia say " This hound can hunt "WW

BRW and I broke open my last bottle of this stellar juice today along with the 1999. The 98 is about as good a cab as could have been produced in this uneven vintage. Still powerful and tannic but super drinking stuff. No sign of age and no doubt this hummer could easily have improved for another 4-6. Still outstanding and no change in scoring. The 99 is very similar but has more pronounced fruit in the nose and on the palate. Like the 98 it is nowhere near the TOIG but as good as this sucker is why wait? 92/92.45 14.5 % alc. WW
