Someone I know very well called me and offered me his collection of Opus (6 bottles each) from 1983 to 1993. Curious to know if you think its worth the 10K he's asking?

Not from me.

I'd rather get a root canal. WW

PW,

I think that is a high price (ave $150 a bottle). I've been to auctions lately where Opus One has been picked up for less on better vintages like 94 and 99 (listed below). I know that these are newer but previous Opus Ones also were not much better in price, especially a vertical. I think that if you consider that the auctioneer takes 15% off then the prices average between $85-$100 for OWC of validated storage, then you should be able to go back for a better offer much lower than $10K.

Thanks guys. I passed on the deal. Although stored correctly, Id rather stick to buying current wines than stuff I didn't rightfully buy on release. Got to stick to my guns. After all 07 Insignia and Dominus are suppose to be awesome and released at good prices. Heck I bought the 06 Caymus Special Select at $79 per bottle.

Never could quite understand the allure of this wine. I've had it several times in various settings, but it has just never worked for me. One of my favorite Napa Cabs has always been Lewelling, and a few of you out there have tried it also. It's a low production Cab and usually sells out within days of release. And - ta da - you can get three bottles for the price of one Opus One.

$79 is a great price! That was for a while but I don't see deals like that out there anymore for Caymus SS. I am excited about the 07's based on the barrel samples that I've had but only been able to pick up a few 07's to date. Caymus SS, Dominus, Scarecrow and Tobin James. Will look for more as they are released.
