Many are aware that Costco has some real bargains on wine, and while I'm a proponent of supporting your local retailer, I thought I'd pass on some of the deals I just took advantage of (since they're wines recently discussed here) at the Monterey, CA location (assume Costco's nationally carry mostly the same stuff).

I'll have to take a look locally. Not all Costcos are the same. They have their head buyer up in Seattle and he loosely oversees the eight individual wine buyers in the eight Costco regions. They all have quite a bit in common, but each regional buyer has some leeway in bringing something that they feel will do better in their locations. Did you know that Costco is the largest wine retailer in the U.S.?

I did not know that, but quite frankly, it doesn't surprise me.
Again, I still recommend supporting your local wine shop when at all possible. I've found that my local shop(s) are more than willing to offer substantial case discounts on special order items they don't need to inventory.
I bought a case of Simi 99 Alex Valley Cab (which my guy doesn't usually carry) for $15 a bottle. Costco has great deals, but there is something to be said for the supporting local businesses and the great info a quality wine purveyor can provide.

I also support the locals as much as possible... but I draw the line at paying their price of $60+ for Lynch-Bages when Costco has it for $36.

Well, I work at my local wine shop, and the best part is I get a 20% employee discount even on sale items. The owner marked down the 98 Insignia to $90 a few weeks ago and I picked up a few. Life can be good sometimes.

I think your Costco must have some especially good bargains. When I was in your area, I saw the A Mano Pimitivo (one of my QPR favorites)at Costco for $5.79. I was pleased, thinking the price had dropped, but I was flying and didn't pick it up assuming my costco would have lowered the price as well. Got home to Sacramento and it was still $6.99. Still a good deal, but I love a real bargain.

I can proffer one. It is Taste of Monterey, where I just ordered another case of Logan Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Pinot for Mother for Christmas.

I live between Salinas and Monterey, about 7 miles from each. My office is in Salinas and I play/dine generally on the Monterey Peninsula.
While A Taste Of Monterey has a couple of nice shops (one 3 blocks from my office) that represent Monterey County wines, their prices are high.
Local wine shops to note if your looking for Monterey County wines or Napa/Sonoma for that matter include:
Grapes & Grain in Salinas (831)424-3482 talk to Dick Arentz (owner)
Zeph's One Stop in Salinas (831)757-3947, talk to Zeph or Vince (I bought a case of Simi 99 Cab for $15/bottle from them just before Tgiving); also IK, they have tons of Talbott/Logan (including some 97 Pinot remaining; case price will probably be around $16)
also in Salinas, Star Market (a locally owned upscale grocery store) has the biggest inventory of Monterey County wines available; Victor will offer 10% off case discounts on Logan and any others
On the peninsula, their are many but Rancho Cellars next to The Barnyard in Carmel probably is the best known(831)625-5646
also try Monte Vista Wine & Spirits in Monterey at (831)375-2135

Thanks for the info. I paid $19 for the '98 Logan (better than '97) at TOM, but got free shpping which just about made up the difference.
