I have an opportunity to purchase 96 Silver Oak Napa Valley. My questions are

1. Was this a good year for Silver Oak
2. What is a good price
3. IS the 98 Napa better or worse than the 96

Thanks,

Mark

Here's some info from their own web site that might help you - www.silveroak.com/pastreleases.asp?l=DK

Thanks Kcwhippet:

I saw that site prior to coming to here (I'm a newbie as of today to this site). Have you ever had the 96 NAPA and if so, what were your thoughts on it?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, I am wondering if you posted this here (Wines without a category) because the wine in question seems to have been made from Oak without the benefit of grapes?

The common wisdom is A) 1998 is a very poor vintage in that neck of the woods and B) you can always get THREE bottles of comparable or better wine for the price of one bottle of SO.

AND, dear Mods, what is up with the "flood control"? Some of us have faster minds than that.....

Botafogo:

What wines would you reccomend in place of these that cellar nicely for 10 yrs? Can you list out some for me here - I have just started buying and want to drink some/cellar some as well.

Thanks,

Mark

Well, for starters:

Sella & Mosca Marchese di Villamarina Cabernet Sauvignon 1993, Sardegna
$33.00 and worth twice that.....World Class Cabernet at a really affordable price (this gets press comparable to any Napa / Aussie cult wine but is more like a wonderfully elegant Bordeaux).

And it is already ten years old.

To answer your post, for whatever it's worth, the 96 Napa got a 92 from Parker. Is selling retail for 119-139. Haven't opened one yet so no personal tasting notes. WW
