Ok, you experts out there, here's something for which I need advice. The third grade teachers have a hellacious end of the year math test to grade and are gathering at my house next week for a "correcting party." People are bringing snacks and nibbles, but I really don't have any idea of what. I'm supposed to supply the wine. There will be seven of us; probably won't need more that three or four bottles of wine. What would you serve?

Depending on how this goes, it may be the first and last annual correcting party! I need a few more specifics on bubbly. Champagne? Asti? Lambrusco? Don't know too much about these things, remember.

On a 9 month old thread, I found this from WW (what a surprise)"Col Vetoraz, Millesimato, Val###%$^%&&$@ (bunch of letters) Prosecco", followed by a translation by Roberto. This, whatever it is, sounds really good. Do you think it's something I can easily find?

Should be able to find some Prosecco if not that exact one.

For easy sippers, suggest Tommasi Pinot Grigio, Michel Lynch Sauvignon Blanc, Duboeuf cru Beaujolais such as Fleurie, Chiroubles, etc. (all roughly $10), Cline Syrah ($8), Fat Bastard Shiraz ($8).... lots to choose from. You also might use the opportunity to try some Finger Lakes Rieslings.

I was going to agree with a bubbly, but that Finger Lakes Riesling idea from Hotwine is GREAT!

My kid will never get into MIT because his third grade math teacher gave him a 98/100 on his final exam AFTER SHE DRANK A GLASS OF WINE. We were counting on his billions in the software industry to pay for his younger sister's brain transplant and mommy's liposuction.

Georgie, the following might help you with assigning the sequence of events re, correcting first/ imbibing after.
The ancient Persians would not sign a contract unless wine was consumed first. If their contract partner refused wine, they suspected him/her. They believed-- rightly so, to this wine-o--that wine ameliorated their mental facilities.
In any event, bubbly is good, but the Finger Lakes Riesling idea is gooder still.

Well, now isn't that interesting. But speaking from my experience I'm not too sure I would attest that wine has IMPROVED my thinking ability! As a matter of fact, I've done a few "unthinkable" things after consuming a bit too much wine....
Can I get Finger Lakes Riesling around these parts? Any particular brands to ask for?

The Riesling has the added advantage of being low in alcohol, typically 8-9%, which should help you keep your composure for the evening. Not guaranteed, of course, but it should help... Can't have any wild & wooly teachers running amok in Joisey!

The Jersey shore may not be the best place to find Finger Lakes Riesling. The ones likely to be there, if at all, Dr. Konstantin Frank and Hermann Wiemer.
If you can't find 'em, go for the bubbly--Prosecco!

Ahem. Now then, Foodie, (well-behaved boy that you are), I think you are right about the availability of the Finger Lake wines in this area. I tried two places today with no luck. I did, however, pick up a bottle of Snoqualmie Johannisberg Riesling, about which, if memory serves, (no sniggering, HW), I've read good things. I'll also look for the Prosecco. Thanks.
Just did the search for the Snoqualmie Riesling. Other Snoqualmies were reviewed but not the Riesling. Guess we'll just have to drink it and see how it tastes!
I found Bucko's notes about it. Sounds like it'll be OK. I paid $7.99 way out here in the East.
2000 Snoqualmie, Johannisberg Riesling, Columbia Valley, Washington, $7. A very perfumed nose of honeysuckle pleases the senses. This straightforward summer quaffer offers up apple and peach fruit, finishing with delicate sweetness. NW distribution only. 81/83.
